With a passion for advancing the impact of nonprofit organizations and a career spanning over two decades, Andy has dedicated himself to fostering effective governance practices and designing tailored strategies for nonprofit boards.

Professional Background: Andy brings a wealth of experience in the nonprofit sector, having worked with a diverse range of organizations to enhance their governance structures and capabilities. Andy’s expertise lies in guiding boards through a common sense approach to their roles and responsibilities, and ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the landscape of nonprofit leadership. Before becoming an independent consultant in 2023, Andy spent 15 years at BoardSource, the premier organization focused on nonprofit governance, most recently as the Associate Vice President of Education and Outreach. In this role, Andy developed BoardSource’s educational resources, training programs, and educational content for their national conference. Andy is a regular speaker and presenter on a wide range of board leadership topics and played a key role in the creation and development of the frameworks of Purpose Driven Board Leadership as well as Measuring Fundraising Effectiveness. Andy also created and co-led the Certificate of Nonprofit Board Consulting course, which has trained over 1,000 nonprofit consultants across the country.

Governance Roles and Responsibilities: Andy excels in clarifying the nuanced roles and responsibilities inherent in nonprofit governance, centering governing bodies to a higher calling than simply overseeing an organizational entity, but always staying focused on the purpose, and the reason the organization was created. Through this guidance, boards gain a comprehensive understanding of how to center the community served, while maintaining focus on fiduciary oversight, ethical considerations, and the importance of transparency and accountability.

Board Assessments: Recognizing that continuous improvement is vital for any organization, Andy specializes in conducting thorough board assessments. His approach involves evaluating board performance, identifying strengths, and pinpointing areas for growth. These assessments serve as a foundation for tailored strategies to enhance board effectiveness.

Strategic Visioning and Empowering Boards to Fulfill Purpose: Long-tenured in facilitating strategic visioning and board retreats, Andy empowers boards to envision and shape the future of their organizations. His collaborative approach ensures that strategic goals align with the mission and values of each nonprofit, fostering a unified and purpose-driven approach to decision-making.
